I guess he (the cop) REALLY REALLY wanted to get to that "safe-driving" session.

STATESBORO, Ga. -- A father was seriously injured and his son killed Tuesday when their SUV was rear-ended on Interstate 16 by a police officer who specializes in nabbing aggressive drivers and who was en route to Chatham County to take part in a safe-driving campaign, officials said.

Cpl. Robert Balkcom, assistant commander of the Georgia State Patrol post in Statesboro, said no charges have been filed yet, but they are likely, against Dougherty County Police Officer Jeremiah Fenn, 25, of Albany. Fenn was headed to Chatham County to take part in the Thunder Taskforce, an effort to curb Savannah's rising traffic fatality rate with the help of 40 officers from around the state.

Fenn was driving eastbound near Metter when his car struck the SUV, which was traveling in the same direction in the same lane, Balkcom said.

The SUV overturned several times, ejecting Milton Wilcox, 33, of Savannah, a passenger who was not wearing a seat belt, police said.

Wilcox was pronounced dead at the scene. The dead man's father, William Wilcox, 57, of Savannah, the SUV's driver, was airlifted to Savannah's Memorial Health University Medical Center with serious injuries, Balkcom said.

A two-mile eastbound stretch of the interstate was closed for about six hours while members of the Georgia State Patrol's Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team investigated the accident, Balkcom said.

Witnesses told authorities that Fenn's police car was "traveling at a high rate of speed," an issue that will be addressed by the investigation, Balkcom said.

"There will more than likely be charges," he said.

Fenn was a participant in a statewide program known as Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Traffic (H.E.A.T.), a collaborative effort of the Governor's Office of Highway Safety and eight local law enforcement agencies to nab speeders and aggressive drivers.

Fenn wrote more than 2,500 citations and 1,000 warning last year and in February was named his department's officer of the year, officials said.

stinking cops writing 2500 citations most of them probably for speeding and he freaking kills someone for speeding. i can't even imagine how fast he was going to cause he SUV to turn over so many times especially seeing as how they were going THE SAME DIRECTION. irritating as hell...my sympathies for the family hit

i drive down I-16 VERY OFTEN. EVERYTIME i see at least 2-5 cops flying past me with no lights or sirens. simply speeding and being above the law. hopefully the family will press charges and slow these idiots down.
