Well, it looks like I am going to just bite the bullet and get my oil leak fixed. Hooray for a grand :wtc:
it's the cam seals on both sides. Requires the motor to be pulled, or at least that's how the dealerships are going to do it. Wonder if topspeed or someone would do it cheaper????
The cam seals shouldn't require the motor to be pulled. Its just a little bit more work than a timing belt install.
current diagnosis from chatham parkway subaru is valve cover gaskets and cam seals possible timing belt due to oil leak $988.81 is the quote...only 20k miles on new motor if that.
988 is crazy . It should be around 380 in parts and 0 in labor. That includes the water pump. If yours is new you can knock another 90 off the 380 for a whopping 290 in parts. You managed to do the clutch on the car so you should be able to do this your self. You can get close to these prices at subaruparts.com or other online oem parts dealers.
yay for chatham parkway subaru I was thinking about going there to get my timing belt done, but i am not so sure now...
well i haven't scheduled the appt yet so if anyone would like to make some side money that knows what they are doing...hit me up...I am willing to buy food, travel to the location, and beer, plus pay some cash! So just hit me up before noon tomorrow and we can work something out...otherwise i am just going to have them do it. that clutch was a PITA and i really don't know if i could do it again without a motor stand. parts list i am told i am needed are as follows: part number - description - qty 13272AA162 - GASKET ROCKE - 1 13272AA094 - GASKET ROCKE - 1 13293AA051 - GSKT ROCKER - 1 13271AA071 - WASHER ROCKE - 16 806732160 - OIL SEAL 32X - 4 13028AA240 - BELT TIMING - 1 PLEASE SAVE ME SOME MONEY WITH SOME HELP ON THIS!!! HAHAHA
Do not take the motor out of the car. Totally unnecessary. This is so much easier than a clutch. First thing is take of the timing belt covers and asses the problem. You may not need to replace all the cam seals so your parts price may be cut significantly. If it is only the cam seals that are leaking you don't even need to remove the valve covers to replace them. The hardest part in all this will be removing the cam gears on the cams that need seals. part number - description - qty 13272AA162 - GASKET ROCKE - 1 7.58 13272AA094 - GASKET ROCKE - 1 7.58 13293AA051 - GSKT ROCKER - 1 7.58 13271AA071 - WASHER ROCKE - 16 39.62 806732160 - OIL SEAL 32X - 4 18.14 13028AA240 - BELT TIMING - 1 114.26 Total cost on the dealership recommended parts 194.7 Are you sure you don't want to even try to do it yourself? I added this but it is not necesary if the tensioner is new and the procedure is followed for resetting it. 13033AA042 TENSIONER 109.46 Even with the tensioner is is still only 304.23 for the parts.
I am honestly scared to try it myself. i would love to help and learn as this is my first one of these cars...but i am still in the dark on alot of this stuff. i did have some help on the other stuff that has been done from jake and others.
edit: this is my old car. the 2.5 swap was finished at subaru of jacksonville. IMO this was one of the things that should have been taken care of by them as they had both valve covers off. i talked to will and he said to have jamey call in and have him do a check over. but sojax is over 3 hours away from jamey and this was probably 4-5months ago. if you were up here and had an indefinite amount of time to get it done, there is no doubt we could do it. but....
calling SOJAX now - mgr is talking to Tom...turns out that i only had 12k miles / 1 yr on the warranty. i have already unfortunately passed the milage as well as the 1 yr time frame. I spoke a wonderful woman named Kay and she was very polite. I explained to her what was going on and she went to Tom who is their service manager. Tom then gave the ok to good will all installed parts/labor that they did during the engine install and also good will all parts that i had purchased from them! what can i say! I am LOVING SOJAX right about now! Will...i asked for you to do the work i hope that you don't mind. I will be bringing the list of supplied parts and everything that was done to the car while at sojax. my appointment is for next tuesday morning at 7:30/8 a.m. so i will see you then!
oh so they are paying for whatever in this repair is a result of the original install. Gotcha. I figured they would work with you. When you getting it done?
Great! WJM and SOJAX FTW! WJM fixed my car in 15 mins and it took me 5 hrs one way to drive there . But the drive was so worth it to fix that annoying issue. Good luck on your issue Rick. Make sure you let me know what your problem is.
hah that wasn't all it was leaking Yo....Will..good to meet you today by the way! just got home in the convertible 08 sebring! hahaha
Hopefully I can have it finished thursday morning...didnt have a chance to get it all the way apart today.
valve cover gaskets were seeping on both sides. Those are being replaced under a parts warranty. PS line was lose and leaking, fixed that. The front camshaft caps looked like they were not resealed properly and leaking oil. The left side more than the right...so I'm talking all 4 apart and sealing them up.
we put the heads on initially and followed Subaru torque specs, but the car was taken to sojax to button up the install. The removed both heads and reattached them.... We were told one stud was broken so they took both apart to check them all. So I would assume all that (minus powersteering lines of course) would have been last installed/torqued/replaced by sojax. This is all pre-will of course.
By law we are required to keep all service records for 5 years (Its Federal law IIRC). Of the records we have on this vehicle for SUBARU of Jacksonville, there is nothing in there about removing the heads. What is on there (i have it in front of me from Dec 17/2007) *Replaced timing belt idler pulley. *reset belt guide clearance. *transmission over filled, drained and refilled to proper level. *filled cooling system and found crossover pipe oring leaking, removed intake manifold and replaced both orings. *Installed missing engine block studs, had to remove axles for that *one valve cover bolt broken in left side, jacked engine up to drill and repair. *bled clutch *AC servicing, bad oring on low side line. *both mounting bracket location pins broken off of radiator, those were epoxied back on. *test drove: found MASSIVE oil leak. Timing belt covered in oil now, found no sealer or oring for the oil pump and NO FRONT CRANK SEAL either. Cam seals looked OK at this time. Installed oil pump oring, properly sealed oil pump to block and installed front crank seal. New timing belt due to oil contamination. *New ALT belt of proper length. So there's nothing in there about removing the heads or having the cams out.
yes....lots of problems...but now that master will is on the scene...hopefully this will be the last of my problems and i can finally start upgrading items.
This is what is scary to me about trying something like this. I guess if I had a car that wasn't a DD that I could take the time to mess around with it.
see I didn't know it was a valve cover bolt that was broken. I was told stud, and immediately assumed block to head stud. But yeah that other stuff sounds about right. And the transmission being overfilled?? That's weird we didn't touch it. In fact unless Jamey filled it, it was installed at SoG. And as far as the oil pump goes there was no sealant or oring on the 2.0l so we didn't think anything was needed, there was a little soft rubber separator in there iirc. Yeah I never pretended to know what I was doing I knew the best resource for doing the swap was here. And we went on what little info we could find. And I was only there 3 times it was mostly worked on by Jamey and his "ase certified mechanic" buddy. But other than that I think most of the other stuff was left untouched. And was left for sojax to complete.
his father is the mechanic...but he never came out there that much. anyways..it is where it is getting fixed...so no matter whose fault i don't really care... i just want the car back...hahah it sucked coming home without it! Thanks again Will for taking care of it for me.
i agree...WJM FTW.. thanks again for answering all my dumb questions...but how will you learn otherwise!!
