TMIC or FMIC? re: Milo's numbers

  1. Milo, I saw your dyno numbers and I have to say

    Awesome numbers man!

That being said: Do you think the top mount is holding you back some, or do you think that with the combination of the larger hood scoop and the larger TMIC that a FMIC would barely get you more power...

I'm debating investing in the TMIC (scoop, sprayers, and larger scoop), or holding back for the FMIC... Thoughts?

Anyone is welcome to chime in of course, but I thought Milo would have a unique perspective because he has invested time in the TMIC...

I think the Meth Injection on Milos car is what is making the biggest difference. Aside from that I personally like the Top Mount, or when I can save up the money to do so, I will do a V-Mount Intercooler setup.

With the Front Mount, you will get more lag, but more power at the top end I think. It is all dependent on what you plan to do with the car. If you are going to Auto X, then stay with the Top Mount. If you plan to Drag, or just want a fun car to drive around (as if it isn't fun already) then the Front Mount would probably work well for you.

the main reason i stuck with a top mount was because i mostly autocross and didnt wanna suffer any more lag... the meth is whats the big power adder here

without meth, the difference between TMIC and FMIC has usually been around 30-35whp... quite significant if u want power and dont mind the additional lag that comes with a FMIC... remember now, its not just lag in boost but more importantly the lag in throttle response... let me explain this:

with the TMIC, the path for air between the turbo and the engine is very short... so when u step on the gas, boost reaches the engine quite quickly... on the other hand with a FMIC, when u hit the gas, all that air in between has to be compressed which takes a little more time... i have never driven a FMIC equipped car so this might not be a big issue in daily driving... however, response is quite important for me at the autoX... hence i decided to take the hit in peak power and stick with a TMIC

now meth does 2 things... 1) effectively raise the octane level of the fuel and 2) cool the intake charge... hence ur TMIC could behave like a bigger FMIC... SS dyno tuned my car for a while and the intercooler was REAL heat soaked, but with meth spraying, the car didn't ping even once...

now i havent yet seen a WRX with meth and a front mount so i dont know how much of a power hit im taking... but SS believes that meth will significantly reduce the gap between the power levels of a FMIC and a TMIC... i think im making enough torque right now and i would probably not go for more just out of concern for the engine and tranny...

btw, theres a 18g/FMIC wrx (Coolrex) coming to get tuned by SS the same day as the 500 member party

btw, SS played with my tune some the other day and now i feel the punch right at 3200 (as opposed to 4000 as u can see in the plot)... cant wait for dyno day to see my final numbers

I am sticking with the tmic. I autox mainly and want the fastest spool up possible. Less piping faster spool. I am willing to sacrifice some topend and some extra hp. If you are a dragracer or your car never sees daylight below 3k, then fmic is your option.

While I'm not debating that the FMIC will suffer some additional lag, I'd like to see some actual numbers. Honestly, how much will a well tuned FMIC setup lose time wise vs. a well tuned TMIC? Scott, Doug...?

i'd guess about 300 rpm and about 0.5 seconds response lag... got nothing to back it up though since i dont know of any car with the same setup as mine except with a FMIC

if you're still interested in a top mount you should check out subysolutions. they're having a close out on gpmoto tmics for 499. that's almost half off. e-mail chris@subysolutions.com

  8. Nah, not interested in purchasing one right now.

All I really wanted to know was whether the TMIC is holding back power at your current power levels. I'm sure that there would be a small power shift of some sort if you went to a FMIC, but I was curious if you thought it would be a significant difference or not. I would really like to preserve the top mount for as long as possible.

800 RPM's faster? thats serious! What was done to create this earlier spooling? I've heard a GM solenoid can increase the spool up time...

i bet the high flow cat that he has it holding back a little bit of power also

    super siegel + magic :D

im pretty impressed with his work since this was the first methanol 2.0 that he has tuned... his work will get better and better with experience

TMIC as you all know has good and bad. What I dont like is that the turbo is too close to the top mount and we all know heat rises.

FMIC : you guys mentioned there is a lag which is true but has anyone really try to optimize the flow characteristics. The piping and bends and IC sizes all plays an important role in responce time. Big is not always better here.
