Well it's been a while since i did a power mod and last month I added some things and got the tune today by Doug at TopSpeed. Previously on the VF39 I was at 287/337 but power died after 4.5k while the 20g increases it's gap beyond 4k. MODs: Deadbolt 20g Tiel 38mm EWG Detschwerks 750cc Walboro 255 TopSpeed provided MBC Here were the bottlenecks Doug found, OEM air intake hose and OEM headers. Other limiting factors are STi TMIC, catted downpipe, but not as major as the two above. Well, i'll leave those for the next upgrade.
Hmm nice and balanced. 330/330. Yeah with a FMIC, better downpipe and aftermarket intake you should jump a good bit. Nice man
nice. good numbers. im in need of a new tune myself. headers or a crossover pipe is my next mod to open up the airways.
Yeah - mine's loud (atmospheric), to say the least. Did you go atmospheric or recirc? I'm also running a wrx exhaust manifold and making a good bit more power...I didn't think it would be that restrictive, would it? I mean, I know aftermarket would be much better, but I didn't think that would be at the top of the bottleneck. Tune looks good - bring it back out to little tally at the end of the month and run her again
Nice numbers, my friend. Very nice. Every time I see one of these dyno sheets I miss my subie. Drew, are you DDing your STI with an external wastgate? :eek3: I feel like that would get annoying really, really fast.
Right, I realize that....but everytime you get on the highway, pull out to pass somebody.... Ok yeah that would be badass. Absolutely ear splitting turbo howl and rumble pretty much when you want it. Nevermind.
Precisely. I like it, it's only loud when you want it to be. I hear the gate starting to open around 3k rpm, but it's not howling like mad until 4k-ish. I now know what turbo lag is...this thing drives like a freaking turd until it hits boost - then it takes off like no other. As long as I stay under 5psi of boost, it sounds stock. I actually like the lag...the car feels like two completely different animals Strayen - is yours atmospheric?
Drew, it's atmospheric. I try to stay off of going above 14psi on local roads. I also am feeling turbo lag as 3.7k is when i get peak compared to like 3k with vf39.
your next mod should definitely be one of the following 1. Meth injection 2. Meth injection 3. Meth injection BTW I have a trunk mount kit for sale since it will not work on the new mini van.
I guess I'll be the first to say this, but how come a 20G with an external wastegate is only making 330whp? You could get a VF48 and make those numbers. Lots of cars have made waaaaaay more power on the stock headers, stock intake hoses, catted DP, and STi intercooler, so thats a weak excuse for a weak tune. Maybe you had some bad gas in the tank or the turbo is on its way out.
VF48 might come close in terms of torque number however horsepower is another story. They will peak very high similar to a VF39 then just dies off with little power and torque after 5000rpm. this is a 2008 STi dyno, stolen from member sponaugle on iwsti. Very similar setup with 2.5block, sti intercooler headers etc. Look at run 2 without methanol even on methanol, that particular VF48 did not come close in terms horsepower with dyno variance included. so waaaaaaay more power? I'm not sure
Yet again people fail to understand what really matters. It may not make as much 'peak' tq or horsepower as x turbo can but it makes more power across the entire powerband especially after 5500 rpms. Here's a way I like to compare graphs. Take the torque made from 3000 rpms to 7000 rpms in 500 rpm increments. Add them up. Do the same for the horsepower. Example 3000 rpms you make 180 tq, 3500 rpms you make 200 tq, 4000 rpms you make 300 tq, etc. Add 180 + 200 + 300, etc. The 'better' package will net you the better powerband. Of course as always there are exceptions to the rule but you get the idea.
Ok, how bout I phrase this a little better. This car is makin 18G power levels on a much bigger turbo. Something is off, either in the tune or in the motor, and the bottlenecks that Doug used as an excuse are weaksauce excuses. I know this is bench racing at its finest but a 20G should be capabale of 360-380whp, with the lower end being STis with stock intercoolers and exhausts and the higher end being cars with FMICs and external wastegates. The waaaaay more power comment was less of comparing this tune to a VF48 and more of showing that the bottlenecks arent really bottlenecks but EXCUSES FOR A LACK OF POWER. I've never heard anyone say that the stock headers are a bottleneck until you get to 500+HP builds and plenty of VF39 2.5s have made 330/330 at Topspeed.
Not all cars react the same. My car made weaksauce power on pump gas. It was pitiful. I must have a hot spot on the head or something but once you feed my car alky, it turns into an animal. Both Doug and Scott have commented on how poorly my car does on pump only but how redicoulous it is on alky. When i swap the engines we will find out the truth as if if I have a hot spot or not on the heads.
