Ok, pulled my axles out. driver's side rear has a 4 inch tear in the inner boot. this would explain the intermittent popping and vibration

DOJ looks fine. I cleaned all the nasty grease and water out and checked it out.

anyone have an axle lying around I can steal the boot from? I'm gonna see if SoK can get me some axle boots so I can repack them

ok not that anyone gives a shit:

disassembled the inner DOJ. the races look fine, maybe one overheated spot but its still smooth. getting an axle boot tomorrow from SoG and going to repack it and hope for the best

anyone want some pictures of a disassembled DOJ? (double offset joint)

If you are already hearing popping and feel vibration it might be too late for your bearings.

I'll let you in on a little secret. The OEM "remanned" Axles are actually brand new units.

they don't make reman rear axles. =\

I took apart the DOJ and it looks ok. one hot spot but there are no scores and the balls are still smooth. there aren't any real bearings, just the joint itself with a series of races
