Tranny noise diagnosis

I have this strange tinny vibration/buzzing coming from my transmission. The best description that comes to mind is that it sounds like there are a few key rings sitting on there while it vibrates. (louder than this, but whatever) It is worst in second gear, but I hear it at speed in other gears. My second gear has an extra little something in there when I shift into it. It is also difficult to get in reverse most of the time (even with rolling forward a bit in second or first). Anybody have any ideas? I am going to take it in to SOK, but I want to have an idea what I am in for.

It's not the fluid as I just got it changed last week. In fact, it seems louder since that was done. It could just be everything else getting quieter after the 60,000 mile service.

i would say talk to mike at sargent performance... when i had a issue with my tranny he sent me to his guy and got it looked at for free... best of luck to you with the problem though

Sounds like you have some internal damage if I had to guess...or a throwout bearing gone bad. Feel free to give me a call.

I too can see the vultures circling overhead, but was hoping to get a good prognosis. Doesn't sound too promising right now.

^^^^I believe the vulture would be more regarding dealer labor rates. There are many great Vendors here and Mike is definitely one of them. He has given me great advice and helped me out recently when I was in a jam with my Suby at no cost or personal gain. SOK is also awesome if you're under warranty or can afford their rates.

Actually I have not made a thing off of any of the free diagnoses that Andy or I have made. We just try to help folks out. We have also had people go to the dealership and get $5600 quotes on something we can handle for a third of the price...it's nice having a transmission GURU available who works for extremely reasonable rates. I am sure there are some others on here that can vouch for Andy and I helping them out often times for free...Sparta for instance when I swung by to check on an issue he was having ;)

Hell yea, you saved me a lot of trouble. I was about to pull my manifold off before you made your suggestion which turned out to be the solution and only took me 10 minutes to fix!

I am thinking OEM fluid as it was the 60000 mile service at SOK.

difficulty getting it into reverse is nothing new or anything to be concerned about.

The noise could be bad bearings inside the tranny or even something simple like a clutch throughout bearing

x2 on that, even before i got my Kit from Sargent Power, Mike helped me out shit tons of times, even sacrificing his own time....till 2am anyone? Def swing by and have Mike or Andy take a look.

Since you just got the tranny fluid changed last weekend at SOK you should take it back to them since you didn't notice it before going in.

That is why I said I was planning on taking in to SOK in my first post. If it was the throwout bearing, shouldn't it stop when I press the clutch? It is still ringyringy with the clutch in.

It definitely has that loose bearing kind of sound.

Sounds like a plan, I'm sure Stephen will tell you like it is. Other than the sound reverse has always been a PITA for me. I have double triple pump it, especially the 02. Good Luck

Guess what? I popped the trim off to look at the shifter to see if it was something stupid before I took it in. There was an effing penny and a nickel sitting in there rubbing against the shift linkage. How they got in there I will never know.

It was worst in 2nd because that is where the linkage is lowest and farthest to the left and it gave the coins more room to jingle. There is still a tiny grind/rub shifting into 2nd but the sound is gone.

Great news!! Glad to hear it was something simple. As for how they get in there...usually through the e-brake hole. I have found some interesting stuff that managed to somehow get down in there. Pennies, lighters, etc.
