I need to know what kind of fluid the 5MT and rear end take in a 97 Legacy GT...

Anyone know off hand? I'm pretty sure the both of them are gear oil, but I don't want to slap the wrong wieght into it.

yes, as last I checked Classic Subaru doesn't carry it. Bring your own gallon jugs as they come in 5 gallon containers, but should sell it separately, as long as you provide your own containers.

transmission is 3.7 quarts and I *think* the rear diff is one quart.

So I looked up this fluid online and what I'm seeing is that its a 75w90 oil. Would it hurt if I put GL5 in instead of the subaru fluid. Whats the difference between the two?

my answer stays the same. Use the 75w90 Extra S. I've tried many different gear oils in my RS and Subaru transmissions tend to be particular in the fluid you put in there.
