    Hi all,

Today I cruised over to the Wachovia on Tech campus to hit the ATM. I went to the ATM, got back in my car and cranked it but the shifter felt very weird. It would not go into reverse. It would not go into 1st, and felt very weird. In fact, even when the car was in neutral, if I let off the clutch, it still went forward. It is almost as if it is stuck in gear. It's being towed to SOG now.

Its an '05 with 31k miles, and I just bought it a few days ago. I've been babying it, but I can just hear it now... "Oh, the car was driven hard, so its not covered."

What do you guys think will happen? I have a feeling they are going to try to tell me its not covered, but I drove the car all weekend, everything has been fine, even before I got to the bank it was driving fine. I pull up, turn the car off, and 60 seconds later when I get back in, its all screwed up. Any ideas???? Here's how it was parked, not that it matters. I just can't understand why something like this would happen so suddenly.

    Thanks,
    Dennis

If you bought a week ago it should still be under warranty. Most used cars have a 30 day, I think. I am sorry to hear of your misfortune, but I think all would be okay, I know I would fight tooth and nail to protect my investment.

    Did you buy @ SOG?

Unless you bought it "as is" you should be fine.

I did not buy it from a Subaru dealer however the car has factory warranty until 60k (Powertrain). So I hope SOG will do the right thing. Although I did not buy it from a Subaru dealer, I did buy from a dealer (as-is). I am hoping the factory warranty will take care of me.

my comment above assumes that it was purchased at a lot or dealer used. If you bought from an individual probably SOL. Same thing happened to me 3months after I purchased, I only had 26K. These 5spd are weak.

The problem is what abuse it suffered before you purchased.

Thanks for asking, man. I called SoG today numerous times. Neal is my service advisor. They told me that they haven't had a tech look at it yet. I asked about a loaner car, and they said that they didn't have any. So for now, I am very concerned about getting a loaner to get to school & work.

Thanks again for asking and I'll keep this thread updated as I get more info.

Hopefully it's something simple like the shifter linkeage being loose or something similar. If the car was driving fine before in all gears it's pretty unlikely that something major just broke down on you. Either way, let us know if there's anything we can help you with!

Good point Moose...When I toased 2nd gear there was no mistaking it although all other gears were fine. I was told that I broke nearly an inch off of the shift fork.

What has me curious is that the car acts like it's in gear even in neutral.. it really sounds like the linkeage; even a roasted tranny with everything inside chewed up should not do that.

Yeah funny you should bring that up, Neal seemed to think that may be the problem. I'm hoping it is, I cant wait to get that car back!!!!!!

If I have to buy a 5MT trans, where can I buy it? I have heard bad reviews on the 6MT, that people lose some speed. I looked on Gruppe-s.com and all they sell is the 6 spd.

What was the verdict here? Linkage or worse?

As of now, the transmission has still not been opened and inspected. However SoG told me that the evidence strongly suggests that the shift forks are bent/broken.

Hmm, I broke nearly an inch off my fork and still shifted 1,3,4,5 fine...well enough to get it to the SOG. Well good luck.

Hi all, I have an update on my transmission. SoG removed and disassembled my trans last week. I went up there friday and I got to see all the innards, it was cool. It turns out that the shift forks were not broken, the problem was that one of them was misaligned, which resulted in the car to get stuck in 1st gear. The actual shaft that the shift fork rides on was slightly bent and worn unevenly. But as far as the gears, synchros, etc. everything looked great.

I'm hoping this means that they'll fix it under warranty. But it still has to be approved before they will do it. On a side note, Neal at SoG has been very helpful to me and I recommend him. I hope to give SoG some business in the future.

    Wish me luck,
    Dennis

Be sure and write a review when everything is finished. Good to hear its nothing too major. About the 6speeds losing speed, thats probably just because you have to shift more frequently. Shorter geared 5speeds are a lot of fun but I'd love to have a 6th gear for cruising as well as top speed runs. Most of the RA gears should be gear limited to 150mph or so.

I got my car back today!!! Damn it feels so good. I will write a review when I get a moment. I didnt have to pay, SoG covered it under warranty. They replaced not only the bad shift fork, but all of the shift forks. Damn it felt so good to finally drive my car of the lot!!!
