Anyone ever run into this? The current owner of my WRX has Toyo Extensa HP 225/40/18's with around 40k miles on them. Tread wise they still have at least another 20k in them. But to explain as best I can: the tires are cracked SEVERELY only on the inside treadwalls JUST above where they are attached to the wheels. Its SEVERE on 2/4 tires, and starting to show on the other two fairly noticeably. There is absolutely ZERO camber wear/all 4 tires' treads are worn evenly. Just curious if anyone has ever seen this. Luckily, I decided I wanted to rotate the tires on the BMW today so he decided to do it as well while we had the tools out and we caught this. We took pictures and he is going to swing by the tire place on his way home from work tomorrow and show them to them. He is rightfully afraid to drive on them, and fortunately he has 3 other vehicles. Anyone seen this? Do you think Toyo will reimburse/replace the tires? Any explanations as to possible cause? my ONLY thoughts are similar to camber wear issues im having on my BMW; high mileage on stock springs. he has almost 200k on the stock shocks and probably close to that on whiteline springs (properly aligned) and i have 250k on my stock springs (every other suspension component, even bushings had been replaced) will try to get some pictures up later Thanks in advance
Have seen it before.Had my own tire business for 13 years.Tire defect.nothing you did.Do not drive on if you can.Toyo should cover it.You probably will need proof of purchase.
I had a tire completely separate at the sidewall once, though it happened at approx 160 mph. It was an H rated tire and not designed for those speeds. I suppose if the owner has been driving very fast and overheating the tires it could cause that.
he uses the WRX as a DD/commuter for his 70+mile (one way) commute every day. rarely sees over 80mph. update: went to the tire place, they called Toyo. we took the wheels off last night, he took them in the back of the Explorer today to Dublin where the new tires (identical, sent by Toyo overnight) will be mounted and balanced and the old ones will be mailed off to Toyo. he had to buy the new ones up front, and Toyo said they will look at the bad ones and send him a reimbursement check (including shipping) if they agree its a manufacturing error. should have brand new tires on tonight and will know within a day or two if Toyo is gonna do the right thing
