I have a 2002 WRX Sedan with the following mods: TBE, IC Hoses, Unichip, STS
I do the following types of racing: Autocross, and Drag
I would like a turbo that gives me more: mid- top end power
My budget is: 1200 or so
My engine management is: undecided yet
My tuner is: Probably Top Speed

Help me out if you can guys. Ive been searching all day and ive seen diff opinions on diff turbo setups. I do not want to HAVE to build my motor. Im looking for high 200 to low 300whp, and on top of that ill do alky injection. Im willing to upgrade the TMIC to a bigger TMIC, injectors, and pump of course. I just don't want to have to get pistons and rods etc at this moment. What turbo do you guys think would be best for me in the types of evens that i do? BTW i do more drag racing than i do autoX.

$1200 is a little low for a complete turbo kit as well as possibly a new intercooler and engine managment. The intercooler wouldn't be completely necessary, but it would be very helpful with 300 whp.

I would say a VF22, possibly used, would be the best turbo for your needs. You would gain some lag, but you mentioned that you wanted mid range to high end power. So I would say definitly the VF22 for the price, HP gains, bolt on, etc.

The 1200 is just toward the turbo not a "kit".

i would say the vf 22 also. maybe a 16g. both are pretty much proven to make 260+ on the ej20 at least with ecutek. scubydrew had a vf22 for sale not sure if he sold it or not. might wanna pm him.

Any of the IHI turbos should get to to just under 300whp.

The VF22 is the largest of the JDM STI turbos and best suited for drag racing, but you may want to ride in a VF30/34 or VF39 (USDM STI turbo) equipped car. These will spool a little quicker than a 22 and give a little better midrange and a little worse topend.

18Gs seem to be making good power with a little bit of lag (though I'm not sure how much more than a 16G or VF22). If you're doing alcohol injection the 16G or 18G would probably be better since these turbos seem to really like a lot of boost and timing.

Another, more important question, how long do you want your engine to last with a bigger turbo? 50K miles, 100K?

100K would be nice. Eventually i am going to build it with rods and pistons and such Just not before 2006

You should be able to make it that long on a good tune. The problem with trying to get good topend out of our motors is that the piston rings cant handle more than 16psi above 6000 turns for that long before they fail.

If your engine management supports multiple maps you can just have a daily driving map that tapers the boost towards redline and a race map that runs your alk-injection and hold as much boost as possible to redline . . . ideas to think about.

Well i don't plan to run it for more than say 25K miles without replacing pistons/rings etc. I will build the motor by march of 2006. What about the Momentum EJ20-40? Anyone know much about it?

1200 is quite a bit of cash toward a turbo....i have a vf22 on my car and am very happy with it..not sure what your total out of pocket you can afford but if your looking to spend 1200$ on a turbo you are also looking to spend another 700$-900$ on fuel mods (650+ cc injectors and Fuelpump) and then another $300-$1000 for intercooler then another $800-$1000 for engine management..soo i hope you have some lute..however if you want to try and stretch your money i would get a vf22=$500-$600 sti 565cc pink injectors for $300-$400 and fuel pump $100 ecutec for $850 and sti topmount for $300-$400 and that should get you pretty close to 300hp

By no means do i have alot of cash, but i do have deticated funds for getting my car where i want it to be. My goal before its all said and done is to have 500+hp and a rock solid, daily drivable, street beast. I know its not going to come cheap, but you have to pay to play.

why not start with an sti if 500 ponies is your goal..thats a lot man..i cant wait for you to do it! but you will definately need a built block to withstand that power

    500hp= new tranny

yeah 500 hp eventually will mean new tranny. And i would go with a 2.5 liter to get me there as well. I mean the heads will even bolt right up. So will the exhaust etc. Having already done it I can tell you it's not cheap. So anything I can do to help let me know.

Might wanna look into a P&P'd VF34 or VF22... that + injectors + fuel pump should come in right around your budget.

I was looking into MomentumTurbo EJ5-40T as i was shopping for new turbo. It seems like it's making good power but sometimes not so good. My only concern is it's reliability.

So i decide to go with PnP VF34. It should spool slightly slower than stock td04, but plenty enough to ease up downtown go-stop traffic.

I plan on getting a 2.5l STI shortblock pretty soon...does anyone know if there are special head gaskets needed to run the 2.5 on 2.0 heads. I would assume that that would be the only possible problem with matching the two.

Also i plan on running a FP Green or something similar on the 2.5l with supporting mods of course. What kind of power should that make on a conservative amount of boost(to ensure some longevity) and will the lag time be streetable??

I cannot remember if they two blocks have the same head gaskets or not, I'd ask alex (who knows everything about swapping these two) but he's passed out drunk. I'll be sure to ask him tomorrow. I'm leaning towards saying that the two gaskets are different. However, the new 2.5 blocks, which are all Forester blocks all have the same heads.

yeah definetely go with a 2.5 bottom. i would ask scott or doug what you can do to get to your target HP/TQ numbers, they'll probably both tell you to get the 2.5

I didnt go with the STi because i like the 01-03 body style better and at the time it was the cheaper choice between the two. Ive always had more fun building a car than buying a car that boasts lols of performance. If i have to go with a 2.5 block, ill go with an axis block i suppose. I know eventually ill need a new transmission as well. Thanks for the feed back guys, lots of good ideas going on here. hopefully when i come down for the dyno day ill get a chance to ride in a few of these car with upgraded turbo's to see where i stand.
