 I have a crisis my stock up pipe has gone to shit, and I am supposed to leave for florida friday night. Im going to buy one today and I need to know what all is involved in the install so that i can have topspeed flash it before i leave. They are to busy to put it on. So any kind of help would be useful. I have heard that it is a pain in the ass.

UP and DP gaskets are needed. you must pull the downpipe to get to the uppipe. don't for get the PB Blaster. if you feel like driving up to college park i wll help

I can help also, but this is a long job. I have all the tools needed. If you can't unbolt the bottom engine mount, this will be an even longer job because you will have to remove the turbo manifold. I think this is the instructions that I used: http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/showthread.php?t=194. I definitely wouldn't start without some help though if you have never done this install. This was the first install I did, and it took much longer than the 8 hours.

I will eventually need to replace my uppipe and Exhaust manifold (with PPC version.) Why is the DP needed to be removed. I bought all new gaskets from engine to Turbo but i didnt get the turbo to DP gaskets

The DP needs to be removed because two of the nuts for the UP are conveniently located under it. :)

i wouldnt risk cheap on gaskets. especially right there where all of the engine movement likes to loosen bolts. go with the Cu-Seal gaskets at www.crucialracing.com. definitely worth it.

You are asking for trouble (OP)
If running uppipe with mods is a dangerous game.
When the EGT goes up the cat in the UP may start to fail and when it does pieces of it is goin right into "you know what". and if its small enough it may go through and then guess where it ends up ?

If the UP "has gone to shits" I would still check the UP for broken parts and start tracing if the parts are still in the turbo or maybe your IC is catching it. Once it goes past IC
start looking for a new engine

I think it'd require an act of god for the uppipe cat to end up in the IC or engine. :) (Think about it...)

I used stock Subaru gaskets (new ones of course) and no leaks in around 12k miles with a solid uppipe.

please explane to me how a piece of cat on the exhuast side is gonna end up in the ic from the compresser side??? if the turbo passed a piece of cat from the UP it would end up in the DP.

*damn moose you beat me too it. lol

    no eplanation needed
brain fart. the exhaust stream and intake stream is totally separate. but if the UP cat kaputs it will be new turbo

i was thinking crap from intake and BOVs all day

Well guys I put on my up pipe last night and cranked it up and now at 5000 rpms ther is a loud rattling noise coming from the turbo. Any ideas what it is?

what uppipe did you get ?
If you get one of the gutted or a used sti - check the heat shield. they are only tacked on at several places and ive seen a few of the tack(welds) coming apart. or maybe you have a part too close to each other.

5k rattle - on the road or stationary

  31. FrankenSTI

    FrankenSTI Member

Both, its not a heat shield it definetly sounds like its coming from the turbo.

did you check your existing (old) up
for damages and chunks missing that went into turbo ?

  35. FrankenSTI

    FrankenSTI Member

    No but i will

  36. WrxCrazy

no chunks will go into the turbo side or anywhere u should be worried abt..

  37. WRX-WRC

    WRX-WRC Active Member

shady, it is possible that some cat material melted and seperated and went into his turbo.

  38. WrxCrazy

    WrxCrazy Active Member

since these materials r not suppose to melt in anyway, how can this be possible?
