I might be in. i have a gutted UP. i need to get the gaskets and PB blaster still. i was going to come to the install day, but chose camping instead. post up an address later this week. BTW, what is the price for the gaskets at a dealer?
I am very experienced with this install, but thats a far trip for me. I have a garage in Clemson if you would like to come up and do it. I will be glad to help.
this thread leads me to a question: i know there are tons of write-ups on the net, but does anyone here have advise? what is the one or two steps that we NEED to be cautious with?
Use a torque wrench to make sure all the bolts are torqued to spec (the ones you can reach with it at least). That'll help prevent leaks. FWIW, uppipes aren't *that* terrible to install. Just take your time and it'll be fine. I posted a UP/DP install thread here somewhere last year when I did mine (in the garage with hand tools).
well, im not sure how to exactly gut it..but ur welcome to come! anyhow if your wanting to come PM me please =) i just want get a feel of how many people want to come
Moose, any idea what they are suppose to be torqued at? can you over tighten, other than stripping off the threads?
If you overtighten--which is pretty easy, I think the specs call for 20-28 lbs-ft or so, think I might have put the info in my thread--you just run the risk of getting leaks. You'd have to crank the things down pretty damn hard to strip the threads as these bolts/studs are pretty stout.
My bro has a 02 wrx with a leaking TXS uppipe. He would like to join you guys and try fixing it with new gaskets.
Quck question, when you undo the bolts on the up how do you get it out. hnoes: hnoes: And another thing you have to take off the dp in order to get to it easier.hnoes: Good luck, if im not too hung over i'll be by. 23rd is a "speical" day for me.
I've got a gutted up that I still haven't put in, but I'm not going to be in town then. I'll probably just wait for the next install day.
No, just because you take the exhaust manifold off, doesn't mean the stock up will drop down. This is where you would have to jack the engine up, but the frame bolt is pretty difficult to loosen. I've always just removed the turbo manifold and taken out through the top.
I don't mean to start an argument here, but I don't believe that approach is ever necessary. Once the exhaust manifold is off (which is easy to do) you can wiggle it out by twisting it 180 degrees while pulling.
I have never been able to do that... It was always blocked by the heat shielding on the uppipe. Thats why on scoobymods they recommended jacking the engine up to remove the pipe for clearance. Is it different for different models? I did the work on an 03WRX.
on the 02 you have to take the heat sheild off, be careful with the manifold bolts as not to strip them.
http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/showthread.php?t=194 Thats what I used as a reference. It was pretty much right on besides being able to loosed the frame bolt.
I didn't take off: The air cleaner and box Blow off valve Intercooler Intercooler bracket Front 02 sensor wire bracket Passenger side motor mount nut
I agree about the air cleaner box and motor mount, but not about the IC stuff. How did you get to the bolts on the dp and uppipe to turbo manifold that are right under the IC?
They are not right under the intercooler. There are two bolts for the stock turbo heatshield but they can be loosened by using a small rachet or open wrench. I've installed over 10 downpipes on wrx/sti from 02-06 and never took the intercooler off.
well this sunday i'm going to go learn how to do the up pipe and maybe help u guys with it on up install day
