Wrapped it up this evening... spent maybe 3 hours on it last night and probably 3-4 today. Hit a few snags, like losing the washer for the banjo bolt fitting, not to mention it taking freakin' forever to get the actual banjo bolt. Amusingly, after a full turbo/injector install I had a hell of a time getting the damn intercooler back on... Kris stopped by (thanks, man) and gave me a hand with it. I was pretty tired of wrenching at this point... the damn thing started right up though, and ran fine. Amazing. I will let the ECU learn since it'll give the car some time to 'break in' the new setup... right now it pulls way harder towards redline rather than tapering off, but it doesn't feel like as much of a power increase as expected. I figure the ECU will have it figured out in a few days; I did not do the 'Vishnu trick' so my advance multiplier is probably crap still. Seeing a hair over 15psi only... hopefully the ECU will hit boost target in a bit, and if not I will try the helper spring mod which is supposed to cure low boost on the VF34 and Cobb map. Target is around 17. The turbo spools pretty much as quick as my previous setup: stock turbo and Cobb stage 2 (UP/DP/reflash). THAT is a nice surprise. I was expecting 4k spool, but it starts building nicely around 3,000 and seems to hit full boost around 3,500. I did have it ported/polished though, so that certainly helped out in that area. Will report back once things have settled in and I can get a feel for how well it'll run... So far, I am pretty damn happy. It pulls harder and smoother, and doesn't fizzle out after 5500 like with the stock turbo. Without snags I could probably have done it in 5 hours.. but there's always small problems. I spent like 20-30 mins pulling the plastic cover and manifold heat shield to retrieve a dropped bolt.
i was sooooo sick today i ended up laying in bed all day... sorry i couldnt come help u install it... im glad ur happy with the setup... i too am surprised that the turbo spools up like stock i need to swing by that side of town and catch a ride ... i might be up in the area sometime this week installing the new intercooler with kris... will hit u up then
Yeah, I think it might be off by 200-300 RPM but the power comes on as quickly, smoothly and linear like with my stage 2 map... it feels every bit as driveable as before.
thats awesome... mine is about 500 rpm slower and the power comes on smooth but slower than the stock turbo that hits hard at 3k...
i'm still debating whether i should get PnP done on my vf34 or not... and should i add SMC alky injection or not...
Looks good man!! I really want to see the difference between a dyno of my car with the VF29 and a similarly equipped VF30 car. I let my friend Joel drive it before the retune and he said it felt much torquer than stock even from 2000rpm. Being sad, I build boost from around 26 or 2700 and hit 19psi a little over 3000.
its hard to compare... i saw 2 similarly modded wrx's (one with a vf22 and one with a vf34) and they both made almost identical power
yea..it feels real smooth!! give it a couple of days and your ecu should relearn everything..!! glad your enjoying it man!
I am missing about 2psi boost still... so will start working on that this week. Going to try the VF34 hoses first (Cobb recommends starting with stock hoses), then a spring if needed.
