I just installed an Alpine 9856 with their iPod adapter. It works really well. The headunit and adapter will run you about $230 from www.crutchfield.com

    I bought an Alpine CDE-9846:

Its pretty cheap, and it has been damn good for $150! It plays MP3's so I have a few mp3 CDs burned, and I think it is better than a factory unit. Plus they also sell the iPod cable for it, which plugs right into the back of the CD player so you dont have to bother with the FM transmitter for the iPod (which degrades the quality of the music). It was very easy to install too. I have always had alpine head units and they have always served me well!!!

Good idea picking up the new ones with the inputs. Alternatively, you could soldier one on to your pre-07 as well.

gettin a card placed into the pre 07 is an alternative but you will need a white noise CD playing because it does not know when to switch

buts its cool if you want to mix two tracks :)

I'd say go alpine or clarion. THeyre quality seems to be equal but personally i like the look of the clarions a lot better... i don't like the slanted look that a lot of the alpine's have...

i have a clarion and LOVE it!!

i'm gonna do the hands free blue tooth and ipod thing shortly...

I have the 9856 like I stated earlier. I love the thing. I need to take pics of my setup. I have an Ecutek Data monitor mounted with the headunit.

Haha, That is the same thing I bought first. I actually bought the 9856 first (I liked the flip-down face) but it didnt work well in my car. The way the radio mounts in my car (05 wrx sedan) Did not allow me to use the trim ring that came with the radio because it would not fit. So I had to mount the radio without the trim ring. Anyway, Once I had it installed, and hit the button to flip the face down, it was so close to the trim around my dash that the face kinda got stuck and would not automatically flip down. So I had to hit the button and then pull the face down which sucked. Thats why I ended up with the deck I have now (no flip down face). However if you get a different mounting kit, or have a slightly different trim ring than me, etc etc etc, it may work.

As for clarion vs alpine, Its really just a matter of taste. I used to only use clarions. But their newer decks do not look as good to me as the older ones. When I think of alpine I think of a very durable deck.. VERY durable. I have given some alpine decks absolute hell and they still worked. I have also played CDs on alpine decks that looked like they were dragged around a parking lot (scratched as HELL) and no ther deck but my alpine would play it. I will also give props to Pioneer in the tuner department, the Pioneer SuperTuner technology is the s**t, I have had some friends with those and at night they could pick up radio stations from north carolina, it was rediculous! But I digress.

And yes, here is the iPod cable:

I'm a BestBuy employee, and the general consensus at work is ALPINE FTW! I am personally getting this DVD player with iPod cable (gonna mount the ipod in the glove box). You can actually control (skip songs, etc.) your iPod through the touch screen just like you control your DVD's and CD's etc. And yes is fully digital sound, no quality loss. I know its a little outta your price range, but still a badass DVD player I thought I would share.

I may need a few hookups now that you've said that ;)

Love my 9856. Much cleaner sound than the OEM HU or comparable Sony units (I tried two different ones before going with the Alpine). Quick Ipod interface, though not as many bells and whistles as the Panasonic units....

Edit: I also have the forester din pocket. The combo works well and I don't miss the trim ring...

The IVA-W200 is a very sweet unit...I've been considering it for the STi, but I can't justify the cost right now.
