i let it warm up until the oil temp needle almost gets to the 1st hash mark. every morning everytime i start the car
I just get in and drive...but I do not drive it hard one bit until the oil temp reaches 170*F at a minimum.
legacy has lil blue light that tells you when "sport sharp" on si drive is allowed to be engaged..won't work till blue light is off..so I've just made that my time to wait to drive..a minute or two?
If you are that worried about it...just raise the hood after you shut the engine off. I dont worry about it. However, at an autox, if I come off the course and oil temps are near 220*F or more, I let it run with the HVAC on AC-4(Max fan speed for those w/auto ac), which keeps both rad fans on max speed, until the oil temp gets back to 200 or less before shutting it off. Otherwise, for stock turbo cars, it doesnt matter. For big ass turbos...let it idle for about 30seconds before shutting off. That'll make sure the turbo is only spinning at idle (still lots of RPM for the turbo) speeds instead of something else.
The water cooling continues after it's shut off until a certain temperature is reached right? That's why it's unnecessary to have a turbo timer on Subarus. After hard driving I drive easy for a few minutes before I stop to kinda help with the cool down.
No, its not a VW with an electric water pump that runs for a set time/temp target after the engine is off. BUT...since all Turbo SUBARUs since 1984 have oil and water cooled turbos it is deemed unnecessary to add a turbo timer...unless you go to an oil only turbo and you dont have that extra minute to wait.
There is a buttload of conflicting information available on the web. Same with the whole engine breakin debate. If you read the Subaru Manual, it specifically says somewhere in there about not needing a TT or letting the car cool down after normal driving. I don't know if there is anything about the warmup period.
According to what I have read, 30 seconds is the minimum on a cool day to make sure the oil gets "around the block" before putting a load on the engine. 2 minutes for a cold day is about what I do.
I fire up the car and wait until EGT's hit 600. That's about 10 seconds. Then I drive easy and slow and stay under 3000 rpms until the water temp needle hits normal operating temps. By then she's ready to rumble.
Will, Can you explain "AutoX-AC"? Unless it gets too off-topic for this thread, I don't want to hijack.
Auto AC....me ment. anytime I type auto....x comes next by habit. like when i type in myautoxevents.com....bzzt, no...n00b...its myautoevents.com.
I like to just jump in and mat the gas. You know, bounce it off the limiter then launch out of my driveway... I feel it gets the oil around the block faster this way. Plus, when the tires are cold it's a lot easier to do a doughnut.
