Ok so i am sitting at 61,xxx Time to mod, But its also time for some new plugs etc etc so its a 2-for question. What Plugs are the best for the ej20? I would also like to gain the most feasable horsepower without completely destroying my gas mileage as i drive 55 miles one way to work a day. Flame and i will skull***k you. :gaysex: Thanks in advance
NGK BKR7E-Copper gapped to .027 No wires to change with the coil packs. Alot of the mods will actually help with gas mileage as long as you stay off the gas pedal. I just got 27 mpg on a road trip to Ohio and I have quite a few mods.
everything said above is 100% true, except LiquidForce's total understatement. The first time I saw the guy I thought about racing him... Good thing I kept my mouth shut! hahah... oh, and plugs can seem intimidating, but they're not too bad. The first time I looked at the task I was like "F THAT!" but after about ten minutes I was feeling better. A used COBB AP V1, TBE, and tune is priority 1!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Actually, brakes and suspension are #1, but you probably already have that.
Yeah, pretty much what everyone else said. TBE, Accessport, FMIC, Coilovers, and some wheels wrapped in something other than Toyos. And make sure to throw a big-ass wing on that muhfucka! And that was awesome^. Way to stick it to 'em, son.
Sway bars are probably one of my favorite mods where bang for the buck is concerned, EVEN THOUGH with our turbo engines big gains can be made through just tuning. I swear the difference my "thicky" bars have made are enough to make me believe I could never own another car without beefing up the sways. And the reason I like 'em better than tuning is I think there's a better gain in performance for the dollar. Of course there's tires... and while some argue that the best gains you'll ever see is with a good set of tires I'm personally not rich enough to reap those kinds of gains as often as a sticky set of tires will wear out.
I recently upgraded to the Denso 1-Step Colder plugs and haven't had any issue. Install was a pain, but when you have the master pEd to help out, no big issue their either. Also, like said above, most mods will increase gas mileage a little, however, for every hp you add, you foot becomes slightly heavier, or at least, that is how it works for me. I think after not touching my car mod wise in about a year, I am finally starting to drive it normally again, and getting to see the slight increase in gas mileage.
Thanks for all the help folks! I did notice that getting to the plugs is a little O.O but oh well. yeah the toyos being going for a set of noeva's. also any exhaust recommendations? just for the sake of curiosity
Once you do the plugs a couple of times it gets real easy. The real fun comes when you are doing a compression test on a hot engine. I recommend doing a test everytime you change the plugs since you are already in there. Also it would be good for you to get an idea on your engine's health before modding.
I love doing my plugs but FMIC cars with a battery relocated in the trunk makes it a snap! I can do all 4 of mine in 20 mins and that's taking my sweet time. LOL I voided my warranty the day I bought my car. My gas mileage rocks on road trips. Last big road trip was the honeymoon and I averaged 30-32 mpg since I wasn't rushing and drove only 5 mph over the limit (75 mph on the interstate). Daily driving to work I avg around 23-25 but I romp on the gas all the time too
i want to do something with the EJ20. STI would be cool too but i dont wanna drop that much money as i hear the STI trans and full dccd swap is way expensive. really trying to avoid major swaps if possible ya know? its the engineer in me, i need to make it better with what it has.

Lag out the butt on a 2.0L EJ205 and you HAVE to do something about the transmission. It WILL break eventually.
I'll see if I can get Mike to post the dyno chart, I had one on my 03 back in the day. Is you're 18G laggy because my GT30R spooled about 2-300 rpms later than my 18g, I'll take that loss to get an extra 40whp on pump gas.
The 240 guys use the Garrett 2871 turbo, it makes good power on those cars, check out www.freshalloy.com, for more info on that turbo. You can use it with pretty much anyones rotated kit.
Injectors, FMIC, TGV deletes, Fuel pump, all the exhaust stuff (kits come with upipe and downpipe usually), catback exhaust, and more. Major thing is that beyond 300whp on the EJ205....it will NOT last long. The stock cast pistons are too soft. You will need rods and Mahle 4032 Pistons (sport or power pack as most call them) in order to make it reliable in the long run. For power I would recommend(for stock EJ205): VF34 or 16G(dont go bigger or you will be hating life with the LAG) STi TMIC (STi hood scoop too) Turbo back exhaust (HKS Hi-Power 3inch is the BEST) Ported stock manifolds w/BPM crossover pipe and Random Tech uppipe 06 WRX injectors with Walbro 255 fuel pump APS inlet pipe *2.5 or 3 inch doesnt matter STOCK airbox/snorkus/duct system AP v2 or EcuFlash tuned by Doug/SS. For suspension I would recommend: Megan Racing Street Coilovers 17x7 or 7.5 or 8 wheels with RE070's or equivalent tyres. STi Transverse link mount bushings (those big bushing thingies at the back of the control arm) Steering Rack Bushings For brakes I recommend: Depends on your driving style, personal requirements and daily use. I prefer Carbotech XP12's front, XP10's rear, SS lines and ATE Super blue fluid with otherwise stock calipers/rotors.
My 18g is not laggy in the least bit....even more so with the 07 6 speed. You can ask Siegel...he made several comments about how quick my 18g spooled compared to others when he was tuning it. Not to mention how redicoulously fast it was up top of 3rd and 4th. I have a few tricks up my sleeve to make it spool faster.
That's not the disco potatoe is it? If so Clark (AZScoobie on Nasioc) said that turbo is horrible on the EJ series. Something about the specs not being what the subaru prefers. He tested it on his personal car.
The Disco Potato is crap on anything, its just not a well matched turbo. 2871 is a totally diffrent turbo
Thanks again for the great input everyone! Now i just need to figure out what to do with the transmission
