On the way to work this morning, I come to a stop sign, wait for traffic to clear, and pull out onto the road. 1st goes no problem, then out of the blue, I'm hitting redline and going nowhere :wtc: as I coast over to the side of the road, I try going through the gears and at first, nothing.. Then as it sits for minute, I hear little "tink-tink" sounds.. I guess that was pieces of 2nd hitting the bottom of the tranny case. After that, I try again, and it goes into 1st no problem. I made it back home taking it easy, and I'm about to dump the fluid to at least get the metal out. The car's not out of commission, but 2nd is definitely gone. It was bound to happen with the setup I'm running.. I knew it was just a matter of time. It's just funny how much abuse I give this thing at the track, and then blow 2nd gear just driving around town Ok so whose got a transmission for sale? :naughty:
That's exactly how my old 5 speed gave out. I was gently passing a car and was only at 5 psi boost which everyone knows the slightest throttle will give you boost. Brrrrrrrrriiipppp clunk clucnk there went 3rd. Took out 4th and 5th getting home. HUMONGOUS chunks of gear fell out the case when I removed it and drained the fluid. What setup are you running now? Last I heard your built 2.0L was not a success.
Yeah really.. I'm running a built/cammed 2.5 that TS built for me last year. Was on the stock trans until today. So what are my options on limited funds? I was looking at an RA trans.. don't have quite enough for PPGs + labor + install at the moment. Build date on mine is 09/03.
Ah.. but cryo-treated? Maybe that's what I was thinking of. Regardless I'd need something to get me by until I can build this one. I would stay away from the track during that time.
Check Nasioc for sale. One other option is that there are several vendors that can sell a rebuilt tranny with your option of gears (including stock). Andrewtech in Maryland is one I know of.
+1 for Andy...He fixed my 6mt and it is perfect now. If you want a semi upgrade, I would try to source a Legacy GT 5MT.
For Chandler won't work well in the long run. He pushes well over 400hp and drag races the piss out this car....more so than I did mine. It'll break sooner or later.
Jeb found one for $500 installed, but it was off a totalled car taht was going to the yard, so the guy was parting everything out, including stock stuff. When Jeb's crashed, we cycled the oil 3 or 4 times, he drove it for a day or so, we cycled it twice more, then he drove it for over a month just going 1-3-4-5. If you baby it, and get all the chunks out before they damage other gears, you can make it last for a few weeks
^ Yeah that's what I've done today. I still have 1st and 3-5, so if I have to, I can drive it. Fortunately I have another vehicle for a daily driver, so it won't hurt if it has to sit for some time. I posted a WTB on Nasioc too.
I understand that I was just saying if he wanted something to tie him over until he could build the 5mt, he could also look for a LGT 5MT...not saying he should get one and expect it to be better than a built 5mt. Hence why I said a semi-upgrade.
Those RA gears are about the exact same as the 03+ 5mt gears. Even cryo treated I don't think they would handle much punishment. Andy has built both PPG gear boxes and M-Factory gear boxes. He actually likes the M-factory gears better, but the ratios are more like 6 speed or RA ratios. They are supposedly coming out with their pro series that are more suited to drag racing. But if you are not going to step up to a build transmission or a 6 speed, I would just source another cheap 5mt for now to get you by or drive 1, 3-5
My 2nd went out rolling up to a stoplight at about 15mph. Going 1,3,4,5 sucks but you can do it for awhile if you get it cleaned out early enough. When I finally got mine fixed I'd skip 2nd every now and then out of habbit.
Drag racing is about all I do, so i'd need something better suited to that. Having some taller ratios is preferred, and i know the Mfactory gears are closer than I'd like. PPGs might be the best option.
The albins are a good choice too. 3500 for the gearset and that includes a 5th that will take you to 207 mph at 8k . This will be the gearset that ends up in the coupe once we sell the 6mt. I may even pick up a 5th gear for my ppg tranny.
I have seen those. Not sure I have heard of too many people running them, but they seem like another good alternative. Similar in price to the PPG's though I think. It does not appear that the Mfactory pro is out yet though.
How much are custom ratios for the 6sp? Would that now be much better if the price is anywhere close given the diff options you have for it
Hmm found out today that the Mfactory pros are out. They are not on the website yet for some reason, but Andy is supposed to be getting a call from them to confirm availability and price. The custom ratios for the 6 speed all seem to be extremely pricey.
Will do. Not sure if he ever heard from them. They are talking about making Killshot a preferred dealer and installer since Andy is one of the few around the country that actually knows how to build an aftermarket transmission. We might even be getting a free sample!
