Have an 05 LGT I am about to drop some dough on for general maintenance and performance items.

Whats everyones take on the pick up tube failures, are 05 LGT's more or less safe then others? Do you wait for it to fail and then replace or is it a no brainer do as preventative maintenance?

If i were to go ahead and replace, i would need the oil pick up tube, and if i recall most people suggested to rtv as a gasket instead of using a gasket?

there is no gasket, OEM and the KillerB pickup both use the stock o-ring.

Consensus says all 2.5L engines. Even some 2.0L are failing too but that's much lower ratio.

I know plenty of people with 05+ LGT's that had pickup tube failures.

what should one use for a gasket when reinstalling the oil pan?

There is no gasket. Scrape old RTV off and reapply new RTV. Preferably Fujibond.

Permatex ultra grey will work just fine, prep is key as with anything. Make sure the pan is straight and flat, kerosene or CRC brake cleaner will remove the old RTV with the help of a scotchbrite pad.

Try not to bend the pan when you take it off, if you do bend it you might as well throw it in the trash and buy a new one as it will always leak.

have to undo the motor mounts and jack up the motor correct?

correct, it also helps if you have a swivel 10mm 1\4 inch drive socket. I think I have one you can borrow at the house.

it's a pain in the dick to get that pan off unscathed, just make sure you're really patient. I think we used a really long pry bar to get it from the side, but we still bent my original pan. Honestly, without completely pulling the motor, I have no idea how you can remove one w/out bending the flange. The back side is so far up behind the cross member and it's almost impossible to get to from the front.

If you're reusing, take it slow and don't get frustrated. It's not going to go down very willingly.

two thick putty knives at each front corner of the pan, slowly tap along edge till it pops free. The idea is not use one spot to pry it off, that's how pans and the soft AL mounting surface get all jacked up. Sometimes it's easier to pull the header/exhaust manifolds off to have room to pry it off.

Quit prying in one corner. I took a thin aluminum spackling blade and lightly hammered it straight all around the front and sides. By then it broke the seal enough to take a rubber mallet and pop it off.

PATIENCE is key here. Took me an entire hour after I had all the bolts off. I didn't undo the motor mounts as I had the right combo of swivels and thin tools but it was annoying and hard to get to.

OP - Thanks for asking this question. I have been wondering if I should do this for my 08 Legacy. Sounds like it is definitely something worth the time and money.
