so at low speeds, like under 10 mph, there is a metal on metal sound coming from one of my front wheels. could it be my wheel bearings are going out. or could it just be my hawk hps pads making yet another type of noise. after 10mph the noise seem to go away or atleast i cannot here them. i never had wheel bearing problems so i have no clue what they should sound like.
I just had to putt new wheel bearings in. Butt my mine made a loud noise all the time at any speed. THey would quite when I got on the brakes hard. I hope this helps you.
I am convinced that if I ever have to do another wheel bearing on my car I will sell it instead. But if you jack up the car and wiggle the wheel (from the top and bottom of the wheel) and there is any play then it might be a wheel bearing.
Its probably just the pads, but if you want to bring it by the shop Ill have one of the guys put it on the lift and inspect it. Matt
thanks for the responses. i jacked the car up and wiggled the wheel and there was no play. then i pulled of the wheel and sadly its time for new brake pads...it feels like i just put these on. I thought i might have been the wheel bearings since they seem to be a weak point on the 04's.
What kind of pads where you thinking of going with, I'm about to do an order with Carbotech I can get you a good deal on a set of Bobcats if you are interested. Matt
To check your bearings, drive down the street (prefereably an empty street) and swing the car from left to right...not quick turns, but longer sweeping turns that really let the suspension load from side to side. If you have stiffer aftermarket springs, you will need to get up to around 30 mph. What you are listening for is the grinding to stop from one turn to another as the weight transfers from one side of the car to the other. If the noise stops when you swing the car to the left then it is your right bearings, if the noise stops when you swing the car to the right then it is your left bearings. This is of course not 100% accurate, but it helps. As mentioned above, you can also put the car up on jack stands and grab the wheel at the twelve o'clock and six o'clock positions and try to wiggle it back and forth, if the wheel has play in it, that is also a sign of bad bearings. ...even though you confirmed it was your pads, I thought I would add this to the thread.
