I want a cf trunk for my 06 sti but I don't really know which one has a good fit and finish. I've looked at seibon, vis, and nrg, does anybody has any suggestions?
i'm sure there's a weight saving, but probably not significant. well, if u think about it, it's probably not a good idea to remove weight from the back since the car is already front heavy. However, i'm considering changing the hood too, so that would offset the inbalance caused by the cf trunk.
If you every plan on seriously autoxing your car, I would not put carbon fiber parts on your car. It will put you in a crazy modified class. I don't know about your trunk, but you do realize your hood is aluminium right? I don't think the cf hood will give you have sort of weight savings. If you want save weight you can always gut your interior. Personally I think there are a ton of mods that will add alot more to your car than a cf trunk. Just my two cents.
The rear decklid is not aluminum. If you would like to "stay legal", and I use that loosely, you could easily just spend the same money on the spec-c trunk deck. This is, infact, alum. Anyways, Seibon makes great stuff. If you are considering just dropping the weight, look into finding a JDM rear bumper beam. That will take another 10-15 lbs off the rear.
I would save your money and put it somewhere more usefull. CF is way overpriced and should be saved as a final mod to a show car. I don't know what your mod list is, but there are a lot of other things that are much better cosmetically and performance. Its still up to you though.
Primitive Racing sells a Fiberglass Trunk for around $365. Carbon Fiber for $485. They are not a known brand like Siebon or VIS, but so far everything I have ever bought from them was top quality. www.writerguy.com/primitive
Japan? But yeah CF isn't the best idea really in my book. One thing no one mentioned yet is that the torsion bars that aid the trunks opening and staying up are calibrated to push against a steel trunk lid, and so if you put something 50 to 60% lighter on there the stock torsion bars will push up on the trunk lid causing it not to seat properly. STi owners have an even greater understanding of this than those with smaller or no wings I'm sure.
Just some additional info, the spec c trunk deck weighs approximately 11 lbs, and you can find it for under $550 from a few of the importers. Not sure on the weight of the CF. Expect to pay 700+ for a quality CF trunk. Or, you could alternatively, invest that $600 or so in a Cobb AP, Springs, Swaybars, Track School, etc.
A trunk swap is going to do absolutely nothing for to improve your car for autoxing, no offense. Taking 10 to 20 pounds off a car that weights 3200 lbs to begin with is not the best of options. Personally I would start off by autoxing your car stock for atleast half a season and then deciding what you want to do with it (ie STU, BSP, AS or SM etc...). IF you are serious about autoxing or tracking your car there is alot better ways to spend your money that carbon fiber or fiberglass hoods/trunks. Again just my two cents.
WRX doesn't come with an aluminum hood. There really is not much of a weight difference between a carbon fiber hood and the STi hood.
Most if not all CF sold for street use is just fiberglass with a layer of carbon mat over it. I have never seen a fiberglass hood weigh less than an equivalent aluminum hood.
thanks for all the info guys, i decided not to get a trunk so i started to research on some new springs. Any suggestions on those, i want to lower the car somewhat.
Yes, the WRX hood is aluminum. Little to no weight savings from switching to CF. If you really want to save weight in the front, you would be better off going with the JDM Bumper Beam, or modifying your stock one, and a light weight battery. Should save you around 25+ lbs.
From what I understand, all RSs, new and old have the heavier hoods. Only the WRXs and STIs have the lightweight Aluminum hoods.
I have a sebion CF trunklid. There was about a 25-30 pound weight difference between the OEM and the CF one. You will need new torsion bars to make sure you dont destroy the new trunk when you use the remote release.
