I'm getting my front windshield replaced @ SoG tomorrow regardless, but I have a question. Progressive is really pushing for a generic windshield replacement even though I get to choose. They insist the generics are manuf. by the same glass makers, its just a Subaru sticker difference. 1) Doesn't the STi have thinner glass for weight reducing? 2) If yes, can a generic windshield replacer get the lighter windshield? Thanks!
Sorry, I know nothing about windshield manufacturers. I know the STI does use a think glass for weight reduction. Not sure if a generic company can duplicate that. Here is what I would try to find out. How much does the Stock STI windshield weigh, and the replacement that insurance is talking about also. If there is a drastic difference in weight, then definitely fight with your insurance to get the stock replacement. If the savings is minimal, then the choice is up to you. Thicker glass is better in that it would be harder to break, but if you are concerned with weight, that might not matter, and since you like to track your car, that weight could make a big difference.
Since the STi windshield is manuf. by PPG, if a 3rd party buys a PPG windshield for 05 STi's, it should be the light weight version. Right? I insisted on "Subaru" glass though they say it's the same. Then Progressive said they only pay for what the "Generic" costs. Which equates to $80 after the deductible. 8( Luckily SoG rocks and they are only charging a few dollars more than having some non dealer install generic glass. Woot woot!
I know that Progressive doesn't give an option regarding 3rd party parts but Nationwide does. My fiancee was able to upgrade her coverage on her 2003 Honda for about $11.00 every six months when she ran into the same issue. I am probably going to switch away from Progressive since they don't offer an option for original parts. Is there anyone in an accident that was happy iwth how their claim was handled that would like to make other recommendations?
Brain i think that you did the right thing on this one. Dont trust the insurance company because they are in the bussiness to make money not spend it!
Ho hum. Unfortunately when SoG says "We will replace the windshield" they mean "A scary looking guy with a hugely hairy mole will arrive late and replace the windshield with a non-oem windshield". I guess that's why the price matched what the insurance company said it should be. Not a huge deal, but still a little dissappointed. This dude's moles had hairs that were literally longer than my goatee. And he was asian so his face was otherwise hairless. Are mole hairs cool in Asia?
ROFLMAO, the windshield guy's mole hairs were actually LONGER. But not quite so bushy. And he had 2 of the hairy moles. Grody
Brian i believethe weight reduction on the STI glass is only the back window, front one is normal! so you can go with an aftermkt won't change much of anything. But it's your choice dude, ins. has to pay no matter what.
thats nasty and so wrong.. that mole looks like my @$$ pimple i had while ago, it's gone tho.. lol j/k ha ha ha
