Well with my recent short block failure and new build is under way! As of now the car is still getting to and from work on 3 cylinders. :p

Outfront Motorsports 2.5L closed deck block
    ARP 625+ head studs
Cosworth 99.5mm Pistons Changed to Mahle 99.75mm pistons
Cosworth Billet Crank changed to stock crank
Cosworth Rods keeping the Manley I beams

Everything else will most likely stay the same. I will be doing the short block swap once the fresh short block gets here from Outfront. Then it will be time for break in then off to TopSpeed for tuning. Will most likely tune for 93 and race gas. Most likely gonna stay away from E85 just due to the toll it puts on everything it comes in contact with.

    Cosworth crank?
    Ballin???? :D

I'm going to do the same, i'm going to get Doug to do a race gas tune for me, and pick up a couple jugs of C16 or Q16. That will be what I run at the half mile next year.

Got a pretty good deal (I guess) so I pulled the trigger. Was just gonna reuse my rotating assembly but the new stuff just made more sense then I'll sell my stuff to recoupe some of the funds. Now I can continue to drive my car to and from work while waiting for the short block to get done.

Watch your oil like a hawk and I hope you don't mess up your heads.

if a bearing spins add another $2000 at least to the cost

you may get hot spots in that cylinder anyways from it not having compression and getting a good burn. or a carbon chunk in between a valve and seat and burn a valve.

I guess you gotta do what you gotta do but I'd quit while you are ahead.

If you want to drive my VW Passat for a couple weeks lemme know.

Wow! That is awesome. I'm gonna try to borrow a vehicle from someone I know buy if not I may take you up on that. I only drive 12 miles to work so it's not a lot of driving.

Just want to give a HUGE thanks to digitizedsoul, without his help I don't know what I'd do or how to get this started!

That stand and hoist look oddly familiar ;) I'm also in Gwinnett, let me know if you need a hand.

    Happy mechanicing!
Just remember the second definition of an engine hoist: "tool also used to test the tensile strength of ground straps, electrical harnesses, and piping."

LOL i broke the same ground strap (bottom one) TWICE.
Gave myself the o'l facepalm for that one.

Hope the Passat does good for you Ryan, God knows it needs a bath inside and out, and pretty sure the turbo is shot but it beats walking!!!

I'm in Gwinnett as well, still new to Subarus, but I know my way around tools if you do need help.

Scientific fact: Only a given number of subaru's can be on the road at one time. One must die for another to have life.

    Mine's alive.

Good luck, I'm praying I don't have a fire from the oil leak.

When things settle down after my wife goes back to work from maternity leave, i'm going to see what days i'm left with and put together a gwinnett meet for wrxatlanta somewhere local to peachtree corners

Well motor is out. Thanks everyone for offering to help, but I got it all done by myself. :)

Now I just got to break it down tomorrow.

Looks like some serious ovaling happened there man, and obviously the cracked stock sleeve which could also have been cause by ovaling.

This is why folks pin their blocks I guess or go closed deck.

Extreme combustion chamber heat, high cylinder pressures and detonation. It's clearly obvious with the amount of pitting at the top of the cylinder wall

  30. stirhino

    stirhino Member

Keep in mind I drove the car for a few weeks daily after this happen. So I think a lot of that crap at the top of the cylinder is from that. Because the other side of the block doesn't look like that

  31. superhawk28

    superhawk28 Member

Hmmmm the fact that both cylinders are damaged makes me question if it was a fuel delivery issue on that side?

  32. stirhino

    stirhino Member

All parts have been dropped off at Ball Racing! :)
#2 piston was shot from ovaling the cylinder.

    So just to recap.

Closed deck case from outfront, but Ball is assembling the shortblock?
I know you switched studs to 625+

Still all the fancy cossy stuff?

  35. stirhino

    stirhino Member

Yes closed deck from outfront. 625+ studs mainly to save a few bucks plus 1/2" are on back order. Deal fell through on cossy stuff you could say. Lol.

    Will be
    Outfront closed deck block
    625+ studs
    Mahle 99.75 pistons
    Sti crank
    Manley I beam rods

    What alloy mahle's?

most people use mahle's for the 4032 which would scare the piss out of me with your setup?

    is this a halloween prank?

If you pull this off it will be impressive, but James and I are both using 2618 for our higher power setups. I know the Cosworth stuff was magic and walked the line.

  37. stirhino

    stirhino Member

They will be the powerpak plus which is the 2618's dont think regular powerpak (4032) pistons can handle the power level I'll be at.

  38. Justin V

good sounds like a nice setup, we'll have to split a barrel of c16 and go make some 30+psi passes.

  39. stirhino

    stirhino Member

Yeah between me, you and James we can split a barrel

Do q16 rather than c16. Mmmmm that peppermint smell.

Well just a quick update. Block will be leaving Outfront in Cali. on Monday (Nov.3) then it will go to Ball Racing to get bored, honed, and assembled.
Also going on it are the Killer B V2 oil pan, Windage tray and Tomei timing belt guide.

Should have it back on the road very shortly

  45. superhawk28

    superhawk28 Member

Why doesn't Outfront do the boring and all themselves?

  46. stirhino

    stirhino Member

They do, but I decided to get all the work done at Ball to help support a local company and so I didn't have to ship my stuff to Cali.
