    Thanks! :wavey:

You're right and I don't care...but it doesn't make it right. I think that is cool though.

And ignorance may be bliss, but it doesn't protect you. There is plenty of danger for the person using the open wifi. I suggest you only join networks you know and turn your wireless off when you aren't using it.

And to clarify I agree it's not right and all. Just stating the legal end of it.

I was under the (maybe incorrect) assumption that nothing had been decided in any direction. Care to point out a reference to your stating the legal end of it?

To stealing of wifi? Its goes both ways and ultimately depends on the service provider's terms.

well you know wearing this tinfoil cup to protect my nuts all the time from everyone's wireless gizmos kinda rubs me raw. I look at it as if you flood my property and/or me with your radiation then I should be able to use it as I see fit. Possession is 9/10 of the law right?

I only wear the tinfoil hat liner outside, the double layered reflective Mylar on the ceilings protect me from the satellites.

The reference I have has to do with DSL carriers and networking more than 1 device on that line. Unless you (as a provider) specifically state in your TOS what can and cannot be done with the service then the bandwidth is the customer's to do with what they want (within the law of course) past the demarcation point.

Again, this all ASSUMING the open wifi in question was not left open on purpose. I know it's hard to understand but some people do actually share their connections willingly. Most providers have in the TOS that you cannot resell their service, but that does not mean you can't share the service.

I don't use open networks generally and have paid for my own bandwidth for well over a decade both residential and in multiple data centers. I don't believe stealing is right, but when it comes to wifi an open network is an invitation in MY opinion.

Also, there is no law that says I can't use an open wireless network. Some "smart" phones will connect to any open wireless network in range without prompting... is that person stealing as they walk down the street?

You are responsible for the network you setup including the wireless signals YOU are broadcasting. Close the network if you don't want others using it.

    Beer? Whiskey?

    Old Dude chiming in....

things I've learned over the years:
    * Don't live beyond your means. Live a conservative life. You have more confidence and happiness in life if you have your financial shit squared away.
    * If/When you have kids, you will always make it work and you will always find the $$
    * adapt, adapt, adapt
    * kill your Facebook, twitter, and any other social media bullshit and start focusing on the life that right in front of you.
    * if you focus on the what is happening in front of you as the most important thing you have to accomplish right now, it will change your perception of life
    * focus on the people you love. spend as much time with them as possible.

    Does this make sense?

Yes with the exception of number four. Whether your talking drugs, social media or prostitutes, the key to anything is moderation. I use Facebook b/c I don't take many pictures and I don't really keep up with calenders like I should. Facebook allows me to see pictures I'm in, pictures I would've never seen otherwise, and allows me to stay in contact with people I would not otherwise be in touch with.

For example, my 10 year high school reunion is this summer, our class is using Facebook as a means to coordinate, plan and invite all of our classmates. I haven't talked to hardly anybody from high school, yet alone been back to see many of them. However, I would've been completely lost on planning my reunion without it.

    Well said, Joe...

I'm actually right in the middle of some "refocus" time myself...

I graduate from college at the end of April '11, at the ripe age of 28. Since then, it has been a true roller coaster. I lost my Dad, have moved several times, and have had all kinds of hiccups and financial setbacks. It boils down to the fact that I was living outside my means when I was in college, and now that I'm a "grown-up," I've got to get my stuff straight. I'm working to get myself into a more stable financial situation, and part of that has been putting some vehicles up for sale (I currently own 3), and selling what sells and keeping the rest. I am ready to not have to tinker with something, and to have something fuel efficient and comfortable that I can drive anywhere/anytime, with no payments. All three of mine are capable of at least 2/3rds of what I want, lol. I've got plenty of hobbies (cars, photography, etc), but right now do not have the time and resources to enjoy them as I'd like. Owning several vehicles is no fun when you don't enjoy them like you should, or have to give up on other things just to "feed and clothe" them. My biggest struggle is parting with my old foxbody, as I've got a lot of sentimental attachment, and hours working on it with my Dad.

With all that said, I ownly owe about 9-10 more payments, and have one other small loan to take care of, then its on to this mound of student loan debt. :eek3:

On a personal standpoint, my focus was all off - it was all about ME, and what I could do when I wanted. I didn't take note of things like I should have, and missed opportunities to spend time with others, and enjoy things like I should have. I've gotten back into church, and redidicated myself to my Christian life. I'm working to make myself happier, healthier, and less restrained.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it :D Back to the derail about free WIFI!

Take care of yourself first. Look out for #1. How happy will YOU be if you live your life worrying/taking care of others?

Glad to hear people are taking a look at their monthly spending and re-evaluating what is important. I've been teaching Financial Peace University for 3 years now and I am always shocked how much "crap" people are paying for every month because they never add it all up.
My wife and I have several discussions a year about every expense we have to make sure it is necessary and fits our long term goals.
We are debt free except a house that will be paid for in under 10 years. Right now, that is more important to us than new cars and boats like we used to have.

I've never been through FPU, but I really want to. I'm a big fan of Dave Ramsey, but have always been nervous of the possibility of having no life whilst getting out of debt. I get bored enough now, lol.

Fortunately, there are plenty of hobbies out there that are cheap if not free. If you have lots of free time and still get bored, maybe a second job is a good idea. At least if you get bored at your second job, you'll still be earning money and not spending it killing time with hobbies.

Well, shy of buying new glass, playing with my DSLR is pretty much free - does that count? :D

I work quite a bit, which keeps me tied up during the week... "Bored" is just a side-effect of the area I live in. I'm still really new to the area, and don't know as many folks, and the folks here tend to be a bit skittish of you when you aren't in their tax bracket/normal circle of friends. There's little to do around here, other than hang out.

I'm trying to pick up more physically active hobbies as well, which tend to be on the cheaper side (biking, extreme frisbee, etc) usually. Sure, you can buy a $3-4000 bicycle, but I'm nowhere near that caliber. I currently own a nice older Trek 4500 Alpha that I havent spent much time on, and the frisbee/football stuff is soemthing I just buy a ball/frisbee for, and call the few folks I do know from here to come hang out.

What I do, or how i survive:

    -No home phone (-$30)
-Will be cutting cable when 2 years are out. Netflix FTW (-$40)
-No car payments (Good at about $300 every month)
-Stopped modding my car at this point in my life.($$$$$$ saved)

Roughly, that's 500 dollars saved every month just on those 4 things.

Most of my hobbies have been physically active ones: running, rock climbing, camping. Better to make staying fit your hobby than have to pay extra for a gym on top of other hobbies. Also, if you are adventurous/comfortable with yourself, you can try things like yoga or dance...great way to meet ladies, they love that kind of stuff.

until you have only one payment each month (Mortgage) you will never truly understand the "Freedom" that comes with it.

Again, I'm all about enjoying life, taking trips, enrolling my daughter in dance/sports/etc. Once you make this transition, it's no longer about 'Me", it's about taking care of 'we"....

when your single, it should be about ME ME ME ME ME ME....

if you take marriage seriously (IE a lifelong commitment), when you're get married, it moves to WE WE WE WE....you always have to consider the other half of the equation.

and when you have kid(s)...it's about THEM THEM THEM THEM (Kids). This should be your #1 priority as you're affecting not only their generation but your kids' grandkids'...

If you don't have this focus, then you're not being the father you should be, the husband you should be or the Man you should be.

that's my opinion and what I truly think is lacking in today's society.
