Tools aren't that big of a problem. It really doesn't take that many, & I can bring everything we need. I'm more concerned about lighting (we're still shooting for Th night yes?). I'm assuming if you're in an apartment, then you don't have a garage? Also, how does your apt feel about having multiple cars jacked up with the tires removed? Most of them aren't too keen on working on your own cars... But if you think that's a go, then by all means, your place it is. I should make a note that on street parking is available at my place, but it's around the corner & down the block. Either one is fine really. Just let us know. Oh, I have this Sunday & Monday off as well, in case we rather do this during daylight hours. -Chris!
how much lighting do we need? and how long would the bleeding process take? my apartment complex has a parking deck... nobody will care if we have the cars up on jacks but is this a messy process?
Messy? Well, it can be... but typically not. At least, not by my standards. Assuming you do catch your old brake fluid in a bottle of some sort, & not just let it flow onto the ground. I'd expect to get your hands dirty though, as brakes tend to be covered in brake dust... My concern about lighting is pretty straightforward. We're flushing the system, so we need to be able to see when the fluid changes color (old fluid is light brown, new fluid is almost clear). If you have a parking deck that doesn't ask questions, & they have enough light to walk around at night, then that should work just fine. When you said apt, I was imagining trying to do this in a corner of an unlit parking lot... So Thurs at your place then? I get off work around 5ish, so figure I could be there around 6pm. I'll bring the tools, just send me some directions. -Laters! -Chris!
the parking deck is pretty big and decently lit... when i said messy, i meant would we stain the parking deck... but from ur description, it does not seem so... how long does this process take anyway? my apartment is in buckhead... where will u be coming from? i could give u directions accordingly
My shop is open to you guy's. Come up Thursday and we can set up our cars for Saturday. There's room for everybody. Beer - boat racing videos and we can even bring in wings!
Cool. Brian, what kind of shop do you have? Whatever kind of shop, that's pretty cool. I'd love to be able to come too, but I think I need to be working on the house with me being gone Sat. Any chance you've got that deposit en route yet? Chris, I got yours today. Thank you. So far I have 1) Michael with a Blown Civic and an LSD (210 to both front wheels, should be very similar to the WRX's) 2) Rexrocker 3) Milo 4) Chris Brian and an S2000 will round it out. We might have a few Porsche driving assistants there also. SS
Scott: What address do you want me to send the deposit to? My shop is in Gainesville . You'll have to come up sometime !
Scott Siegel 332 Lamplighter Lane Marietta, GA 30067 What kind of shop do you have? I would love to come visit some time. SS
Can everybody drop me an e-mail at: siegelracing "at" hotmail.com I have some pre-event e-mails to send everybody.... SS
Doing this in Gainesville is works for me. If I leave directly from work, Gainesville isn't that much farther than Buckhead. Just post the address for your shop, or give us all directions. FWIW, I'll be taking 369 east into Gville. Oh, & I'm assuming that since this is a shop, you have all the tools we need already? LMK if I need to bring something. You wouldn't happen to have a car lift there, would you??? Milo, the actual bleeding process can be pretty quick. I'd say 15-20 minutes with 2 guys. Getting the tires off the car & getting all 4 tires off the ground is (for me) the slow part. Figure another 20 minutes for that with floor jacks & stands, & another 20 to take it back down again. So about an hour per car is my guess. If the shop has lifts, we'll knock this out much faster. -Laters! -Chris!
I don't have a lift but I do have good floor jacks , tools , etc. Will you guy's be coming from 85 or 400 ?
Brian did you get the deposit en route? I've got to get the deposit to the track... What kind of shop is it? I'd love to see it.
hey scotty, I think brian's shop is for building race boats. I think a couple of us are going up to his shop on thursday I believe, to do some work on our cars
just looked up the forecast.... supposed to rain all day saturday i was sooooo lookin forward to this
Milo, no worries man! I did my first SRDIC in the rain and it rocked! I'm sure Scott will reply to this...so I won't steal the thunder. In short, you'll learn so much more and you save your tires! Bonus...no sweat!
05WRXSTI, if you have floor jacks & stands, then this just got really easy for me. I'll bring some light stuff just in case, but you just made my life a lot easier. Do you have a set of small wrenches? Not ratchets, wrenches, & preferably box-ends. I want to say the rear bleed screws are 8mm, which is pretty small for a normal wrench set. Oh, & in case I didn't clarify, I'm heading up 400 to 369 (exit 17) & then heading east towards Gville. That's correct, right? (BTW, what's your name IRL? Not that 05WRXSTI isn't a cool name & all.... heheh) Milo, Bring a large bottle of brake fluid. The kind is entirely up to you. Check the label for boiling points, the higher the better. It'll be on the back of the label in small print. I'm going to be trying some superblue myself, just b/c I've never tried it before. As for where to buy, well all the conventional brands are available at any auto parts store. I picked up my can of superblue online from Cobb, but it's a little late to order from them now. I seem to recall seeing somewhere else on this board that someone local carries superblue though... And yeah, I checked the weather for this Saturday too. 29 and rain with possible ice? Yuck! Oh well. Guess I better buy some new wipers before this weekend as well. lol. Anyone got any snow chains? =) -Laters! -Chris!
Bleeding process shouldnt be all that difficult, and I would recomend ATE superblue. If I get a chance, I may join you guys just for the install; I need to put on my SS lines, flush my breaks and put on new pads... Its all a tossup, and I don tknow how long you'll all be willing to stay so...
Learning in the rain is FANTASTIC. You will learn TWICE as much in HALF the time while doing LESS than HALF the wear on the car. Seriously, in the rain you will learn quite a bit more while doing very little wear on the car. Brian is not going to be joining us, so if there is one more, at the moment we have a spot.
Directions to my shop: 400 to 369 E to Gainesville. As you come into Gainesville on 369 there is a Mcdonalds on your right. Call me when you get into town and I'll come and meet you. It'll be alot easier that way - 770-540-3772 cell Scott: Enjoyed talking with you today. Sorry I bailed on Saturday but I'll make it up to you. I'm sure you guy's will have fun! Looking forward to working with you on the SCCA stuff. Come up and see me anytime - Brian
Scott – I may be able to step in as a substitute for Brian. I had wanted to wait until Feb after I replaced the pads, fluid, factory plugs and such but with my skill level I doubt that would help much anyway. I won’t have time before Saturday to do that unless I burn my credit at SoG and have it done there. I guess that is an option though I had really wanted to do it myself. We have DR testing this week so it’s a slim maybe. I will check over my schedule tomorrow morning and then stop by SoG. If you do not see me then I’m hosed with work. :-\ Obviously if anyone steps up and wants to go take ‘em.
It's cool. I had a Vette owner that was very upset that the school filled so quickly so he jumped on it as soon as I contacted him. I appreciate the offer though. Is everybody left cool with the 23rd? I though there was one person that couldn't do the 23rd so I thought we'd go with the 21st, but it doesn't matter to me. I guess I'll post this in the other thread. Bluebox, thanks again for stepping up, that's very cool of you. Thanks,
Brian, dude, let me just say that it's really cool of you to let us use your shop when you won't be going with us on Saturday. Sorry you had to back out too, btw. What time is everyone planning on getting there? Depending on traffic, I'll be at the McD sometime between 5 & 6. There is a working payphone there, right? Alex, go ahead & bring your SS lines & brake pads. I've done both as well, & neither are hard, but they do require more time. I don't know how big Brian's shop is, but if we have enough space & floor stands to get 2 cars up at the same time, then we might be able do all that too. Of course, this does depend on how many ppl are showing up, so we may or may not get to them. Anyone bringing a digital camera? I was just thinking that it seems like there's enough interest that we ought to post a DIY after all this. -Laters all -Chris!
ptc075: No problem , glad I can help. The shop is big enough for several cars. I'm sure there is a phone there somewhere , no cell phone? How many are coming? I'll have to get some wings brought in - haha. Brian Scott: Thanks for understanding man. Looking forward to working w/ you.
im gonna be able to leave tech between 4 and 4.30pm... i'll head straight up to brian's place... traffic is gonna hold me back but i'll try to get there as soon as i can (using my powerful AWD machine) i'll get my camera... though im not the best at photography... but if alex comes up, he could bring his... her has a steadier hand
Is this only for track goers??? i'm just wondering. If it's possible i want to stop by and learn how to do brake bleeding.
Dude, by all means come on up. Bleeding brakes is a 2 man job, so as long as you're willing to help someone else bleed theirs, the more the merrier. If you just wanna watch, that's cool too of course, but the best way to learn is by doing... Note to everyone who wants to bleed their brakes: Bring a large bottle of brake fluid with you, as well as many jackstands as you have handy. If Brian's shop is as large as it sounds, we should be able to do half the cars at once, then swap & do the other half. The only limiter here will be how many jackstands we bring & how many ppl are willing to get their hands dirty. -Chris!
i dont have jackstands... but i have a floor jack which i will bring along... like i said, i havent done it before so if im shown how to do it, i'll get my hands dirty
For the guys waiting until Feb. We need to get at least 5 signed up. Our 21-23 just got booked by an open-wheel race team... I can do Saturday Feb. 26th if and only IF I have 6 deposits over 2 weeks prior. After that we're looking at March 2nd or 3rd....
Yes and no. I ended up putting the stock airbox back in the car, just b/c that was the only air filter I could find on short notice. My quest for a replacement cone filter for my CAI will begin in earnest once the SCCA season starts up again. If memory serves, Milo is a full 2 seconds ahead of me on most courses... That's plenty of motivation right there. Now if only it would motivate my walet enough to chip my car... lol Oh, & Scott, I got both your e-mails too. Been trying to practice heel-toe for about a week now (I read Speed Secrets before your e-mail on it). Yeah, I'd say I've done it right maybe once...... Gonna take some practice. -Laters! -Chris!
i tried heel-toe yesterday on the way to school.... but failed miserably... drive to school is only 8 min long so i didnt have much time to practice anyway lookin forward to seeing most of u guys tonight at brian's
Hey all, Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who showed up last night for the brake bleeding. Had a great time, lookin fwd to seeing y'all again in the future. Special shout out to Brian for letting us use his shop. Those of you who got there later might not know this, but he actually went out & bought an extra set of jack stands as well as some extra brake fluid just for us, in case we didn't have enough. How awesome is that? Anyway, on to the business at hand. Are we racing tomorrow or not? All the weather reports I'm seeing predict a mix of rain and ice, both here & in Munford. I'm cool with rain, not so much with the ice. Latest rumor I heard was that ice would cancel the event & we'd reshedule, but I haven't seen any confirmation of that one way or the other... Anyone? -Chris!
im posting this on behalf of scott: ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Hey guys, While the rain is highly instructional and desirable, freezing rain and ice are not. I am afraid we are going to have to postpone tomorrow. I have already rented the track the next Saturday that is available, which is February 26th. Obviously if you would like me to refund your deposits I am happy to. If you would like me to hold on to them until the Feb 26th school I can do that too. We are also planning another weekday school in early March. Please let me know if you would like me to refund your deposit, or hold it till the next school. Thank you, Scott <>< Siegel Racing 404-388-8751 www.siegelracing.com Engineer / Driver / Tuner / Instructor -----------------------------------------------------------------------
if the feb 26th date is gonna be same price... please transfer my deposit and hold me a spot on that day
